Out of six Amador High School wrestlers who competed in the Riddle Invitational at Oakdale High School on Saturday, three of them took third place in their respective weight classes.

Eric Lopez, competing in the 112-pound class, started off strong by winning his first matches, both by pins, but lost his third round match. But he came back in his last match to win, also by pin, to take third place.

"Lopez looks good for how early in the season it is," said Amador co-coach Austin Clymer, who shares the duties with his father, Eldon.

As a team, Amador took seventh place out of 20 schools that the younger Clymer says, "which was pretty good considering we only brought six guys."

Mike Wagner, in the 130s, also took third place. After winning his first two matches by pins, Wagner advanced to the semifinals where he lost to Mother Lode League foe Matt Duckworth of Summerville. But Wagner won his next two matches for victory.

"Wagner clearly has a little rust, but with his attitude it should fade fast," Clymer said.

Anthony Antonicchio, at 140s, wrestled well in his first varsity tournament scoring a record of 2-2 that included a pin.

"I was unsure how Anthony would handle himself at the varsity level," said Clymer, "but after recovering from his loss so well, I knew he was where he belonged." Spencer Von Glahan competed in the 160s, and went 2-2 with a pin but did not place.

"Spencer is a very determined guy, and I know he will be hard at work at practice (yesterday)," Clymer said.

Quentin Becker looked good at 171s, scoring a tech fall early in the second round of his first match but then dropping the next one. In his third match, Becker bounced back with a win and two pins to finish tied for third place with a 4-1 record; the Oakdale tourney had a five-match rule.

"Quentin is such a good student and so easy to coach," said Clymer of Becker. "The sky is the limit for him."

Jesse Moreno, a junior competing in the 189s, took fourth place that included two technical falls.

"Jesse is not at his best weight, yet, but looks really good none the less," Clymer said.

Clymer was more than happy with individual and team results. "I am overall pretty pleased with our outcome," he said. "It's kind of fun to come in with only six kids and still make the top 10. I look forward to the season progressing and seeing the kids' skills grow."

This weekend, Amador will compete in the Zinkin Invitational at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
